The Pyramid for Tomorrow, walk-in media art on the market square.

A 1:1 replica of the Karlsruhe Pyramid: outside a white, almost empty volume in the urban setting, with a walk-in interior. Inside, “The Power of Two” by the collective VOLNA opens the sculpture towards the future, a panoramic game about extremes in which individual decisions lead to very different worlds. Conceived by ato Agentur with the UNESCO City of Media Arts.

Outcome over output.

We do not measure our work by how much we produce, but by whether something demonstrably improves on the ground: footfall, use, quality of stay, visibility and follow-up projects.

Approach

Artistic Intelligence.

Artistic expertise as a thinking resource in its own right within processes of change, especially in times of digitalisation and AI. We developed how this works methodically with the KIT, among others, as the ARTCOM transfer method.

Norina Quinte put this up for debate at the InnovationFestival at ZKM: what role art can play when digitalisation and crises bear down on a society at the same time.

ARTCOM · transfer method with KIT

A toolkit of methods for interdisciplinary infrastructure development.

From 2023 to summer 2026, we are supporting the KIT Innovation HUB – Prävention im Bauwesen, as part of a federal research project funded by the BMFTR, in developing interdisciplinary transfer methods aimed at sustainable infrastructure development.

Core research themes

Interdisciplinary structural change: Building bridges between disciplines for holistic innovation.
Advancing sustainability in construction: Resource efficiency and circular value creation in practice.
Multidirectional transfer: Knowledge flows in every direction, between research, industry, art and society.
Fostering innovation: Creative approaches to technological and social progress.

At its heart is the six-stage model, which guides groups from initial exploration to a viable usage concept, with formats such as Fotospaziergang, Green Dealer and Inseln des Gelingens. Science, art, business and society work here as equals.

Ten weeks at the Rhine harbour, purpose-built.

What we put on entirely by ourselves shows best what we deliver for clients. The WERKstattPALAST was a ten-week programme where art, science and the city met, from the purpose-built architecture to a curated programme of salons, performances, workshops and dialogues. Conceived, built and run by ato, co-organised with the KIT Innovation Hub and funded by BMBF (now BMFTR).
